Riding to Olympia, Washington

Hank – Leaving Chehalis we rolled north through Centralia and then followed highway 507 to Tenino. From there we took the Old Highway 99 to Olympia. It was a short ride today to my Aunt Judith’s house. She and her husband, David, welcomed us and showed us to the guest room.

That evening Judith, who is a former home economics teacher, fixed us an awesome dinner meal. We spent the afternoon and evening chatting away. It was great to catch up with them.

Today marked the last of our riding the touring bikes on this adventure. We have to double check the numbers but we pedaled at least 9,300 miles during the last 13-1/2 months.

Kathy – We had another sunny day to ride with temps in the high 50’s – low 60’s. Not much headwind and only 887 feet of climbing. The mountains, evergreen trees, farmlands and the beautiful abundance of wildflowers made it a very pleasurable 38 mile ride.

I found a brand new bright red skein of yarn on the side of the road so I stopped to pick it up for Aunt Judith who prides herself on being frugal. She liked it. 🧶 😊 It was great to see both Judith and David. They really made us feel welcome and ensured we were comfortable. They are such wonderful people! Judith and David are very involved volunteering in the Olympia area community with the poor and vulnerable. It is really heartwarming to see how much they give back to others in need. They really are amazing people! We enjoyed our evening catching up with Judith and David and our conversations didn’t end until after 10pm. Looking forward to more time with them tomorrow.

Hard to believe that today was our last day of riding our bikes in the lower 48 states (and fully loaded). We will continue to see family in Western Washington before flying up to Anchorage, Alaska on Monday to ride in our 49th state. We are leaving our bikes with family in Washington so we will rent bikes for our Alaska ride. After Alaska we will go home for a few weeks before heading to Iowa for RAGBRAI (Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa) the third week in July. It looks like we will be home and our travels will pretty much be done by the first week in August. We will fly to Hawaii to complete our 50th state of riding sometime this fall. In the meantime we will continue to blog about our cycling – just not on a daily basis. I still need to crunch all the numbers from our trip on the spreadsheet, because I think we are closer to 10,000 miles of riding. We will let you know all our trip stats sometime soon too.

We have mixed feelings as we are on the last month of our adventures. We have thoroughly enjoyed our bike travels. We will miss being on the road seeing and experiencing new things and meeting new people. At the same time, we are looking forward to going home to Spokane, Washington to see all our amazing family and friends who have supported us from a distance there too. 💗💗💗
