Hank – This is our last day of riding for almost a week. It was a short day and the ride had only one hitch. Google maps tried to take us on a road that doesn’t exist. Getting around it wasn’t hard. We had quiet back country roads for the first six miles. They were hilly with lots of short and steep grades so the quiet was interrupted by our huffing and puffing. I found a West Virginia license plate. Yay!

We soon got on to US Hwy 60 where we had bike lane for much of the remainder of the ride. Nice! West Virginia has an interesting law concerning bike lanes. If they’re present you must use them. In most other states you still have the option to use the roadway. Oh, and there’s no riding on sidewalks in this state.

After checking in and cleaning up we picked up the rental car early and went out to dinner to celebrate. I can’t believe we’ve come as far as we have. It’s been a wonderful adventure.

I’m looking forward to seeing more family while we ride from Portland to Seattle. But first we must drive there. So much for decreasing our carbon footprint, right?

Kathy – Today we finished up our last ride (East of the Mississippi) into Charleston, West Virginia. We rode 25 miles with 803 feet of elevation. Temps were in the high 70’s with lots of humidity and a nice headwind to greet us. The ride was not hard at all. Even the steep climbs at the beginning didn’t seem as hard as they have been in the past.  Maybe I’m actually getting better at them.  🙂  We rode through a town called Scary, West Virginia…which was not scary, just your typical small town in West Virginia with lots of hills and trees. We also rode through a town called Amandaville, West Virginia, I like that name.  Again, it was another small town with the hills and trees.  We thought of our daughter-in-law Amanda, and wanted to get a picture of the town sign but no signs were around.  Wonder if the Amanda’s around here have secretly taken them?  😉

Our ride was pretty uneventful today. We are super excited to finish up our cycling in West Virginia. We checked into the hotel, cleaned up and did laundry before we caught the hotel shuttle to the Yeager Airport where we picked up the rental car.  The airport is named after Chuck Yeager who is from West Virginia and was the first pilot to break the sound barrier.

We enjoyed a nice dinner in downtown Charleston and then walked about for a while in the downtown area. Tomorrow we will pack the car up with our bikes and bags and then go visit the State Capital building before heading out on our four day drive to Portland, Oregon. Thirteen months on the road and riding bikes in 48 states, crazy to think how far we have come.  We have not been home since Christmas, so as we start heading back to the Pacific Northwest we are excited to see our family and friends!!!❤️💗❤️
