Hank – We had great time with Stan and Rhonda. On Sunday we went to the Strawberry Festival in Troy, Ohio. It’s a huge festival with live music and lots of vendors. Many of the food vendors were selling strawberry-related items, one of which was strawberry donuts. They weren’t as good as everyone talked them up. Probably because I’m not onto glazed donuts. Too much sugar.
We went to the National Museum of the United States Air Force on Monday. The place is huge! They have over 360 aircraft and missiles on display. There are four hangar-like buildings connected together. There’s a bit of a chronological to them. And there are aircraft outside the buildings, too. We spent about five hours in the place and could easily go back more than once. There is so much to see that you can’t see it all in one trip. We were too tired to check out the outside displays. And since the price of admission is zero, you can visit it as much as you want.
During our museum visit I saw a really cool trophy. In 1927, the Spokesman-Review newspaper in Spokane sponsored the Free-For-All Military Air Pursuit Trophy races at Felts Field. Click on the link to learn more about that.
By the way, when we saw the Curtis JN-4 Jenny plane, Stan reminded that his and Kathy’s grandfather was a mechanic who worked on the Jenny airplanes during WWI.
We spent Tuesday morning running errands to get ready to leave on Wednesday. After getting resupplied we met with our friends Josh and Gail Forbes. We’ve known Josh since he was a teen. We stayed with his parents, Barb and Keith, in Maine last September. We met for lunch and spent a couple hours catching up.
Kathy – It was absolutely wonderful to spend some time with my brother Stan and his wife Rhonda. We don’t get together that often since he is very busy with his Air Force career and we live so far apart. However, it was so great to have some time with them both. We also visited with Rhonda’s sister Tina and her mom Wronda since they recently moved in with Stan and Rhonda. The four days went by way too fast. Hopefully we can see each other more frequently in the future (maybe when we both buy RV’s we can meet up 😄).
We enjoyed our time at the Strawberry Festival. The strawberry shortcake was fabulous!! The National Museum of the United States Air Force near Wright-Patterson Air Force Base was spectacular. Our five hours there was still not enough time to see everything. Excellent displays, historical information and amazing number of military planes. Truly enjoyed this museum. Go if you ever get a chance. Hopefully we can return at some point to see more of this outstanding place.
We had a lovely lunch and a good visit with Josh and Gail Forbes. We talked nonstop for a few hours just getting caught up in each other’s lives. It was wonderful to spend time with them.
Our time in Dayton, Ohio went by way too fast. We had lots of downtime just to chat for hours with Stan and Rhonda. This was the best. We enjoyed all of our time with family and friends and hopefully it won’t be too long before we see them again.
The day we arrived in Dayton I pulled a muscle under my left shoulder blade. Lots of constant pressure pain with frequent stabbing pains. I didn’t go to the doctor because I didn’t want to be drugged up during my limited time with Stan and Rhonda. I just toughed it out. It’s been difficult sleeping the past four nights, however I am happy to report it is getting better now. Hopefully all will be well as we get back to riding tomorrow.
Grateful for our time in Dayton with family and friends. And now we move on towards West Virginia – our 48th state. 🚴♀️ 🚴♂️
