E-Town

Hank – We got an early start to beat the heat waking up at 4:00 am and were on the road by 6:00. After about 11 miles we stopped at a restaurant for breakfast. Sine we planned on riding to Elizabethtown, which is a 60-mile ride– I thought we should eat a halfway decent meal. We stepped into the Watermill restaurant and were immediately hit with the cigarette smoke. Other than one place in Louisiana we haven’t seen another restaurant that allowed smoking until now. We asked to sit in the nonsmoking area, which was dark. They turned the lights on for us. The food was halfway decent. Nothing to brag about and the waitress acted like she didn’t care one way or another. So we ate, paid our bill, and moved on.

We headed north towards E Town, as we learned Elizabethtown was called, stopping about every 10 miles to get out of the heat and get some fluids on board. The climbs we had were long but gradual so they weren’t too bad. I called the only campground in town and they were booked up. But the young lady on the phone said she’d call the “big boss”
to see if we could tent in the overflow area because she didn’t have the authority to do that. She called me back and said we could set up camp in the overflow area. Great! We had a final destination for the day.

Once we arrived in E Town the thunderstorms moved in. We took shelter at a gas station while the heavens opened and dumped all kinds of rain. After a half hour Kathy was ready to get a hotel instead. I was all over that because I’m concerned about the integrity of our tent. Since I scraped little holes in the floor and footprint, if we have a lot of accumulated rainfall then we’ll certainly have water seeping in through the floor. That would make for a miserable night. We had more thunderstorms in the forecast so I got a hotel room. We hardly noticed the rain except for the thunder.

Kathy – The heat wave continues in the south, apparently we are 10+ degrees above normal for this time of the year. We rode 60 miles today in 90 degree temps, with humidity the heat index was up into the mid 90’s. We kept ourselves hydrated. We rolled up and down all day. Nothing we couldn’t handle. Our views today were mainly farmlands. It was a good day’s ride, but with the heat and elevations…I’m happy we are done. 😊

  1. This is Caroline in Bowling Green. Just a few places you may want to visit if close to the area. First of all Bardstown, KY is hilly. Near Bardstown is The Abbey of Gethsemani. Also tours of distilleries in Bardstown. A lot of folks tour My Old KY Home & go seeThe Stephen Foster play which is performed outside. Again Lexington KY is BEAUTIFUL. Three Chimney’s Horse Farm is good to tour. Keeneland Race Track is BEAUTIFUL!! Just down the road from Keeneland is the Castle which is interesting. Outside of Lexington is Berea KY which is a quaint town. Natural Bridge at Red River Gorge is a nice short hike. Stay safe
