Hank – After a hearty breakfast at the Ranch House Grille we hit the road for Monument Valley. Way back in 1972 the Boy Scout Troop I belonged to went on a trip of the southwest. Two of our stops were Monument Valley and Four Corners, which were the two places we were headed today. At Monument Valley I went to the Information Desk to fin d out more about the place. I mentioned I had visited here as a child in 1972. The woman behind the counter said, “There was nothing here.” That’s the way I remember it, too. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to make the drive through the valley, which is a shame. So we have yet another place to revisit some day.

Then we drove to Four Corners. Much has changed since my last visit there, too. Both locations are within the Navajo Nation and just as you have to pay to enter the US National Parks, you have to pay to enter these two places owned by the Navajo Nation. I don’t have a problem with that. But the hours at Four Corners are 8:00 am to 4:50 pm. We arrived around 5:30 to learn this. So much for riding our bikes around the monument and knocking out four states in one go.

We headed north to Moab and grabbed a campsite at the KOA. Along the way we saw a beautiful sunset.

Kathy – We left Page, Arizona and headed to Monument Valley which is a few hours drive away but still in Arizona. Monument Valley is very majestic. The tall beautiful sculptures and spears made of different rock formations look like they have literary just grown out of the flat ground that surrounds them. Hank and I would like to come back to this area and do some hiking in the future.

We then drove a few more hours to the Four Corners Monument. If you are not aware, Four Corners is where the four states of Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico intersect. We tried to visit Four Corners about a month ago after we left Texas but they had a huge snow storm that prevented us from going there. Well today we did not get to see Four Corners either because they closed 45 minutes before we arrived. Bummer! Maybe some day on our third try we will actually get to visit the Four Corners Monument.

We decided to continue driving a few more hours to Moab, Utah and spend the night there. We found a nice campsite and we are set for the night. Tomorrow we will explore this area.
