El Centro, California

Hank – We woke early to get a head start and avoid the afternoon heat. We chatted with London Ken and Jill before leaving. They invited us to London and we invited them to Spokane. I hope we meet again. They’re good people. We were on the road by 7:30ish. We stayed on Interstate 8 the entire way except for 10 miles of construction where we had a protected lane on the side of the road. We covered the 45 miles pretty well, arriving at our hotel in El Centro by 12:30. We were too early for our room so we hung out and relaxed until about 2:00.

After showers and laundry we mailed off a couple more pounds of Kathy’s stuff to lighten her load a little more. We walked to a restaurant that turned out to not be worth the thee mile round trip. Ah, well. But I did get more exercise in when I realized I had dropped by wallet back at the restaurant. I ran back and found it on the floor with everything intact. Whew!

Tomorrow we ride to Jacuma Hot Springs where we have a reservation at the resort. They have a special rate for bicycle tourers. Whoo-hoo!

Kathy – Our 45-mile ride today was pretty uneventful riding on the freeway. We had lots of road noise, nice smooth surfaces, and a large shoulder area. We climbed some, but not too much. Our early start saved us from riding in 78 degree temps. We arrived at the hotel just as the temps were rising to 73 degrees.

Once you leave the sand dunes area the freeway runs right next to the United States and Mexico border. So, we got to see the ‘big beautiful wall’ for quite some time. It wasn’t so big or beautiful. It was just a rusty metal fence. We also saw lots of border patrol folks out and about today. Some people were concerned with us riding so close to the border, but we were totally fine.

There were many areas on today’s ride where you are not supposed to ride a bike on the freeway. If we would have followed this rule we would have been back on the pothole and bumpy surface frontage road that we were on part of yesterday. Also, it would have taken us north and then back south adding 20 more miles to our ride and quite a bit more elevation. We decided to take our chances and stay on the freeway. Hank said if we got stopped by the police he would just say he didn’t see any sign that says no bicycles (they are on every freeway entrance ramp). Um…ok, I’m good with that.

We made it to our destination, El Centro, California which is 45 feet below sea level. It is a decent size town in the middle of the desert. We are happy for a hotel and showers tonight. Our three mile walk to a restaurant that received great Yelp ratings was definitely not worth it. All is good though, our bodies now have nourishment in them and it was nice walk holding hands and talking with my sweetie.

Tomorrow we climb mountains. ⛰🚴‍♀️⛰🚴‍♂️⛰
