Ozona, Texas

Hank – The next town down the road, Ozona, was 35 miles away. The winds were quiet at first but picked up quickly after 9:00 am. It was mostly a crosswind coming from the south. I didn’t think it was all that bad until the last eight or nine miles when they got stronger. When trucks passed by they’d disturb the air flow as well as hit us with the air they were pushing aside. We had a few wild side-by-side swerves on the shoulder of the road.

We got into Ozona around 1:00 and the hotel had a room ready so we moved in. After a short break we rode into town and ate a late lunch at Pepe’s Cafe. The food was good and the decor was interesting. The owner collects rock music stuff. Some of it decorates the cafe.

After lunch we checked out the Crockett County Museum. It’s an interesting hodge podge of artifacts. Some of the artifacts were puzzling in that I was wondering why they were there. A buffalo skull from Montana and clay figures from the Honduras, for example.

But the local stuff was great. There was a radio receiver an Izina native made while he was a prisoner of war in Germany during WWII. There was a Bible carried by three generations into war. Authentic uniforms from WWI and later.

Plus, there was the usual old stuff that I always enjoy: musical instruments, cameras, typewriters, tools, etc.

Crockett County was named after David Crockett. (Not Davy. That is a television affectation.) Crockett didn’t spend a lot of time in Texas but he fought for the country’s independence and died at the Alamo.

Tomorrow we have many miles of nothing with strong winds. It oughta be fun.

Kathy – Let me start by saying today was better than yesterday. Thankful. However, it was still a challenging ride. Our temps started out at 27 degrees (with the wind chill). We had side winds at 10 mph that increased as the day went on to 15-20 mph with gust at 25 mph. We continued to roll up and down throughout the day. Happy for our total daily mileage to only equal 40 miles.

The reason we only did 40 miles today is because we are limited on towns in West Texas. There is a whole lot of nothing out here. Stopping for the night in Ozona, Texas gave us shelter. The next town is 100 miles from here, nothing in-between except a rest stop on the side of the freeway. Still working on our plans for tomorrow.

So today I decided to check up on Google Maps elevation of cycling to see if it is correct. Google Maps for cycling said our total elevation today would be 780 feet. I turned on my Fitbit watch to bike exercise and it noted we climbed a total of 1,200 feet. So there Google Bike Maps you are wrong as I always suspected!! 🤪

Today’s ride was a windy one where we often had to lean into the sidewinds to avoid getting tipped over. I was happy that it was a short day of cycling. Since the ride was not too long the 1,200 feet of elevation didn’t bother me too much. We are in climbing country until we roll into San Diego in mid-March. It doesn’t end there either with the increased elevation. We start heading back east to catch some of the middle states we missed.

I enjoyed lunch at a small local restaurant. The local museum was pretty cool too. I loved some of the comment cards in the museum. Have a look at our pics with this post to see comment cards.

We are working on tomorrow’s plans since we have 100 miles of nothing and headwinds 20 mph with gust up to 35 mph. Wish us luck. More to come. Oh and, since we may or may not have Internet tomorrow, Happy Valentines Day! 💗💗💗
