Hank – Today was a rest day. Kathy and I went to check out a couple of museums. The first one, the McKay Clinic Medical Museum, is open by appointment only. So we had to scratch that one. Next, we went to the National Museum of Funeral History.

We heard about this museum when we stayed at The Riders Inn in Painesville, Ohio. It was pretty interesting. Rob Parker, a volunteer docent, gave us the lowdown on many of the displays.

The museum is loaded with displays of hearses, the history of embalming, coffin making, ceremonial rituals, and much more. It’s well worth the $10 to enter.

At dinner we connected with our niece, Jasmine. She’s my youngest brother’s oldest daughter. Jasmine moved here from Washington last summer. We caught up over dinner and then went to Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar where a friend of mine was playing tonight.

I met John Del Toro Richardson almost two years ago in Spokane. He was playing at a house concert. He’s a blues musician and he’s very good. And he’s also a super nice person. At the house concert he was sitting with the bass player and nobody was talking to them. So I struck up a conversation with him. He asked me, “What do you do?” I gave a vague answer as to my profession and he said, “No, Hank. What do you do?” I told him I ride bicycles. It turned out he does too. So we had a great time getting to know each other until it was time for him to play.

As we got closer to Houston, his home, I contacted him and asked if he was playing during our time here. As luck would have it he was. So we ended up at Dan Electro’s and listened to him and Tanya Richardson, who played bass and fiddle. We got to chat before he started and during his break. He thought our bike adventure was cool. I thought his music was cool. I’m really looking forward to making more guitars and writing more songs when we get home.

All things must come to and end. Jasmine has to work tomorrow and this old man needs his sleep. We said goodbye to Jonn and called it a night.

Kathy – It was a good relaxing day off the bikes. The National Museum of Funeral History was quite interesting. Some people think it is a bit morbid to go to a place like this, but there is a ton of history here about death. In addition, lots of cool looking hearst too. If you are in Houston, Texas add this gem to your sight seeing plans.

Spending time with our niece Jasmine was wonderful. It is great to see this gal grow up into such an amazing young lady. She is doing fantastic and it was a joy to have time with her. Thank you again Jasmine for tearing us to dinner! We tried to pay, but she wasn’t having it. She is such an awesome gal.

John is outstanding at playing the guitar, and he sings pretty darn good too. Hank said he recently won an award for Best New Blues Artists. No doubt, he deserved it. We enjoyed our time with Jasmine and John. Times like this is what makes our bike trip so much fun.
