Hank – Today we had a relatively short ride to Patrick AFB. We followed US Hwy 1 for a while and then cut east to A1A, following that to the base. We checked in to the Space Coast Inn where we were assigned a room on the third floor. And there are no elevators. We left our bikes in the first floor lobby and hefted our bags upstairs. Before taking a shower I went back out and rode my bike around the base. It seems to be a pretty sleepy place. Or maybe everything happens somewhere else. I went by the flight line and it sounded like I was at a gun range or something. There were booms coming from all directions. Plus there was a huge chatter of birds as if they were in distress. But I couldn’t see any birds. I finally realized it must be a sound system for keeping birds away from the flight line so they don’t hit aircraft or get sucked into aircraft engines. After a few minutes the flight line was very quiet.

When we checked in we were told we were allowed to eat at the dining hall. I haven’t eaten at an Air Force chow hall in many, many years. Not that it was a huge treat in the first place, but I bet the price is right these days so we’re going there for breakfast before we head out tomorrow.

Kathy – We drove from Orlando back to Titusville and turned in the rental car before starting our ride today. Temps were in the mid 70’s and cloudy during our 34 mile bike ride that was pretty uneventful. It was a noisy traffic day but we had nice shoulder areas so that made up for it.

Hank is retired Air Force so we have the option of staying at military base lodgings. We have never utilized this option during our bike trip so far, but today is our day. A cheap clean room at Patrick Air Force Base will work just fine. It’s December and we have warm weather and no snow, life is good! ☀️
