Hank – We we’re going to get up early but both Kathy and I didn’t sleep well so we delayed our start in hopes of catching some additional sleep.

It didn’t work out for either of us. After oatmeal and tea we got on the road around 9:00 with about 50 miles to cover. Today’s destination was Anastasia State Park neat St Augustine. Today’s ride was shorter than yesterday but seemed to take longer. Maybe not but it just felt that way.

We had bike lane on A1A for the entire route except for going through Jacksonville Beach. Taking the ferry to make the five-minute crossing to Mayport gave us a short break after about our first six miles of riding. The cost was pretty reasonable–one dollar apiece. I paid in cash.

Traffic was heavy when we were going through the citified areas. We enjoyed riding through the wildlife refuge areas the best because there was much less traffic.

Arriving in St Augustine we found several trolley tour wagons, lots of traffic, and many interesting old buildings. We got a tent site for two days in the state park. The wonderful state parks here have washers and dryers, too, so we got laundry done. After dinner and a 1/2 bottle of wine we bought in town we hope to get a good night’s sleep. Tomorrow we stay here and check out all the sights in St Augustine.

Kathy – Last night I slept about three hours. My mind would not shut down. I have been awake since 1:30am so it was a two cup of tea kinda morning. It was a slow morning trying to get the body going and I must say not a lot of anticipation to start riding. A very cold and strong headwind greeted us or first six miles so it was also a puffy coat morning. Our 55 mile ride today was good considering how we were both tired. The weather was sunny in the low 50’s but it did feel much cooler with all the winds throughout the day. I kept my puffy coat on until the last hour of riding.

Just so you know, the Atlantic Ocean is still as beautiful today as it was yesterday. If I didn’t have to ride my bike to our destination I could have sat forever and listened to the waves hitting the beach. So peaceful. The fine white sandy beaches only add to the beauty.

We had fantastic roads and  considerate drivers, which makes for the best rides. I was thankful for that with my lack of sleep. You know I’m tired when I get coffee instead of tea, which is what I did upon reaching St. Augustine at 2:30pm.

We passed by many multi-million dollar estates that were beyond gorgeous today, along with many regular beach homes too (that probably cost a lot in Florida). We saw hurricane damaged areas as well that were in the process of being rebuilt. All in all, the wildlife refuge and the ocean view areas were my favorite.

Our campsite is about three miles from St. Augustine. We rode through town on our way to camp. St. Augustine looks like a great place to explore. Looking forward to leaving all or stuff in the tent tomorrow and riding into town on our lightweight bikes to take in the city sites.
