Hank – Our hosts took us downtown again. This time we got on the trolley car that takes you all around the historic parts of the city. You can get off and back on any time you like all day. We saw lots of different styles of architecture. Several of the historic squares in the city have houses built in specific types of architecture. We sampled and bought cookies, candies, and peanuts from specialty stores.
The Colonial Park Cemetery is a cemetery with graves going back to the mid-1700s. It was closed to burials in 1853 and now is a city park.
Johnny Mercer is from here and has quite the story behind his life. He was a singer/songwriter with over 1,400 songs to his credit. He started Capitol Records. He also wrote the lyrics to the song Moon River, but there never was a river by that name here so Savannah named one just for his song. We cross over it every time we come and go from our hosts house.
We had a great day with everyone and wrapped it up with another fine meal followed by more games of Karma.
Kathy – We really enjoyed the trolley that took us to many historical sites in Savannah, Georgia. They also were very informative telling us interesting facts as we rode along. It’s always fun to go into some of the local shops. I bought a few lightweight trinkets that won’t make much of an impact in my pannier bags.
The riverfront area was pretty cool. I really loved visiting St. John the Baptist Cathedral. The architecture, statues, paintings, altar, just everything about it was truly magnificent. Walking about the city in between trolley rides was good too. We got a nice taste of Savannah today.
After our day out and about visiting Savannah we stopped by the butcher shop to get some steaks for dinner. I’m not a steak fan so I got a small pork chop instead. Just a note, it was a pretty amazing butcher shop. We had another fabulous dinner (with before, during and after wines) and great conversations. Still not making much of an impact in all Don & Barbara’s outstanding wine selections. Diane, Tom, Don and Barbara have the card game Karma down very well now. It was another day filled with sightseeing in the city and enjoying time with our friends. Pretty sweet day!
A couple of notes…
