Fully Loaded

Kathy and I took a late afternoon ride. I loaded my bike with all the gear. It weighed in at 107 pounds. That alone made it a less than pleasant ride. I’m going to shed a few of those pounds. A number of people assumed we were already touring but were still thrilled to learn we’d actually be starting in a week. People think we’re crazy or brave. Crazy is more correct. One of the things we need to do before we leave is to consume the meat and ice cream because it’ll go to waste if we don’t. Our daughter, Steph, won’t eat it because she doesn’t eat meat or dairy products. So I took one for the team this evening.

Kathy’s comments:  It was a beautiful sunny day and a great ride with Hank.  I have not packed up my bike bags yet, but I had weights in my pannier bags. Sadie weighed 83 pounds, I am hoping I can max out at 70 pounds once I do pack my bags.  Maybe I can help with a little of Hank’s weight since we are hoping to max him out at 90 pounds.

I am excited to hit the road next week, but also a bit apprehensive with the physical aspects of the trip.  I have trained well and the muscles are pretty solid but I’m still a bit nervous, which I suppose is normal.  It kind of reminds me of the nights before each one of my past marathons; excitement with a mix of knowing it will be challenging physically and mentally.  Quick Shout Out: Those in Spokane if you ever need a personal trainer contact Justin Rundle with Workout Anywhere, he is totally amazing and will help you meet any goals you have. So, my three main concerns: 1. Elevation (climbing up the mountain passes), 2. Sore bum with riding 5-6 days in a row for 5-7 hours each day, and 3. Getting used to living in outside without all the comforts of home.  In just a week from now it will all begin, 16 months on a bicycle traveling all over the U.S. with Hank…yes, we ARE crazy!  🙂
